Digital EU travel app

The Enterprise Europe Network informs:

The European Commission proposes new rules for digital passports and ID cards as well as a "Digital EU Travel App" to simplify and speed up border crossings in the Schengen area, increase security in the Schengen area and enable more efficient border controls.

  • Digital travel documents: Digital versions of passports and ID cards that can be stored on a smartphone. The data contains information from the chip of the ID card (e.g. facial image), but no fingerprints.
  • Digital EU travel app: An app developed by the Commission and available to all EU citizens and third-country nationals with a biometric passport or EU ID card.

The proposals are based on the 2021 Schengen Strategy and are linked to the European Digital Identity Wallet. They support the Digital Europe Strategy and the Commission's Digital Compass. Once adopted by the Council and the European Parliament, the EU Digital Travel App and the technical standards will be developed and are expected to be available from 20230.
