The Federal Network Agency has initiated consultations on the conversion of network infrastructures to a complete supply of hydrogen.
The Building Energy Act provides for heating systems to be operated predominantly with renewable energies or unavoidable waste heat in future. The exemption in section 71k of the regulations allows natural gas heating systems to continue to be installed during a transitional period until connection to a hydrogen network.
The condition is a so-called roadmap for the changeover. This plan must be approved by the Federal Network Agency. The roadmap is divided into an informational part, with the data relevant to consumers, and a planning part. Among other things, the planning part of the roadmap must show how the network infrastructure is to be converted to a full supply of hydrogen by 2045 at the latest, which area is to be converted and how this conversion is to be secured economically and technically, as the Federal Network Agency explains. The roadmap must also be binding and legally secure.
An informal consultation on a key points paper by the Federal Network Agency took place in April 2024. According to the agency, 21 comments were received from companies and associations at the time. The Federal Network Agency developed the published draft specification on the basis of these comments.
Comments on the formal consultation procedure can be submitted to the Federal Network Agency via a form until September 16, 2024.
