BMFTR launches "Experiment!Material" funding program for high-risk materials research
The Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) published the "Experiment!Material" funding guideline in the Federal Gazette on August 22, 2025. The aim is to support particularly high-risk and disruptive research approaches in the field of materials research.
Pre-competitive individual projects at universities and non-university research institutions that research new materials or manufacturing processes are funded. The projects should run for a maximum of 18 months and provide initial proof of concept for innovative ideas.
Applications can be submitted for the first time until November 1, 2025, with further deadlines following each year until 2029. Funding covers up to 100% of the project-related costs as well as a project allowance for universities.
There is a particular focus on unconventional approaches with high innovation potential. Battery materials, hydrogen storage and CO₂ utilization are excluded from the funding.
