The European Commission has established the Battery Booster Facility as a new funding instrument to support the European battery cell industry.

The innovation fund is expected to provide up to 1.5 billion euros to accelerate the ramp-up of battery cell production projects in Europe and strengthen the competitiveness of the European battery value chain. A first call for proposals with a total budget of 1.5 billion euros is scheduled to be published in the third quarter of 2026.

The Battery Booster Facility is aimed in particular at companies that produce battery cells on an industrial scale in Europe or are building new production capacity. The instrument is particularly relevant for cell manufacturers, project developers, and investors who are in the capital-intensive phase between the start of production and full commercial operation.

Funding is provided in the form of interest-free loans. Loans of up to 500 million euros can be granted per project. The support is intended to be available until commercial operation is achieved and to help mobilize private investment and reduce financing risks during the ramp-up phase.

From a business perspective, the Battery Booster Facility addresses a key challenge facing the European battery industry: the high capital requirements involved in the transition from pilot and pre-series production to large-scale production. By providing interest-free loans, the initiative aims to secure investments, reduce financing barriers, and accelerate the development of competitive production capacities in Europe.

Through the Battery Booster Facility, the EU aims to strengthen Europe’s position in the global battery market, increase security of supply for key technologies, and stimulate private investment in European battery production. Funding is provided through the Innovation Fund, which is financed by revenues from the European Union Emissions Trading System.

This call for proposals is particularly relevant for companies that are currently planning to establish or expand battery cell production and are facing significant financing challenges during the ramp-up phase.
