Alpiq Acquires Ecostor's Energy Storage Business
With the acquisition of one of Germany's largest battery storage projects, Alpiq is expanding its storage portfolio, while Ecostor continues to manage its technical operations.

Swiss company Alpiq is acquiring the Bollingstedt battery storage facility in Schleswig-Holstein from Ecostor. Ecostor will remain responsible for technical and operational management.
The Swiss energy company Alpiq is acquiring the project company Eco Power One GmbH and, with it, the Bollingstedt battery storage facility from Eco Stor GmbH. Ecostor is based in Kirchheim near Munich and is a developer and operator of battery storage facilities. According to the companies, they have agreed not to disclose the purchase price. Even after the transaction, Ecostor will remain responsible for the technical management and day-to-day operations of the facility.
The battery storage facility has been in operation since June 2025. Ecostor developed the facility in collaboration with the grid operator Schleswig-Holstein Netz AG (SH Netz). The project utilized one of the first Flexible Connection Agreements (FCA) for battery storage in Germany. The agreement is intended to establish a reliable framework for the grid connection and operation of the storage facility.
Transparent Operation
Ecostor also makes the facility’s operational data available via a publicly accessible dashboard. According to the company, this allows users to track key performance metrics of the battery storage system. Ecostor views this as a step toward greater transparency in the operation of large-scale storage systems. The storage modules have a combined output of 103.5 MW and a capacity of 238 MWh.
“With Bollingstedt, Alpiq is investing in a project that has set new standards—in grid integration, operation, and transparency,” explains Jörn Rohland, CFO of Ecostor. In his view, the decision by an international energy company to choose this storage facility confirms Ecostor’s approach and demonstrates that experience and operational concepts are relevant in the market.
Ecostor also views the transaction as a sign of the increasing professionalization of the German energy storage market. In the company’s view, when it comes to large-scale storage facilities, installed capacity alone does not determine the quality of a project. Equally important are robust operational and marketing concepts, as well as integration into the power system.
Grid Benefits Proven
The Flexible Connection Agreement plays a central role in this regard. “Bollingstedt demonstrates that predictability and grid benefit are not mutually exclusive,” says Rohland. The agreement creates a reliable framework for storage operations and can help reconcile economic and grid-benefit requirements.
According to the company, the experience gained from this project will be incorporated into the development of further large-scale storage projects. The company aims to support the expansion of battery storage in Germany and mobilize additional capital for new projects.
The acquisition builds on an existing partnership between Alpiq and Ecostor. Both companies had already announced a collaboration in late 2025 regarding a tolling agreement for the Schuby battery storage facility. With the acquisition of Bollingstedt, Alpiq is now expanding its collaboration with Ecostor. Société Générale served as financial advisor to Ecostor for the transaction. Legal counsel was provided by the law firm CMS.
