Additive manufacturing in aviation: certified exhaust component part

23.03.2026

A current practical example from the aviation industry shows how additive manufacturing can contribute to the series application of safety-critical components. Together with partners, the company VOCUS GmbH has successfully certified an additively manufactured exhaust component for flight operations and thus established a continuous, digital process chain through to approval.

By using a metallic additive manufacturing process based on a nickel alloy (Inconel), it was possible to optimize the component geometry, eliminate welding-related weak points and significantly increase the service life of the component. At the same time, the fully documented process chain creates the prerequisite for reproducibility and certifiability in regulated industries such as aviation.
