In Förderstedt in Saxony-Anhalt, preparations have begun for the construction of a large battery storage facility with a capacity of 300 MW. It will temporarily store electricity for 500,000 households.

The modular battery system is to be installed in Staßfurt-Förderstedt near Magdeburg and will have an annual storage capacity of 714,000 kWh. The 300 MW project is being built in close proximity to the transformer station of transmission system operator 50 Hertz and is scheduled to go into operation in 2026. This was announced by the developer and operator of the plant, "Eco Power Three GmbH". It is a subsidiary of the German-Norwegian company Eco Stor.

The company, based in Kirchheim near Munich, specializes in large-scale stationary storage projects and, according to its own information, covers the entire value chain from planning to construction and operation of the electricity storage facilities. For the project in Saxony-Anhalt, Eco Stor is using a block concept that allows for gradual implementation. The entire system comprises three storage blocks, a dedicated transformer station with a 110 kV connection, 96 container stations for inverters and transformers as well as 192 container stations with lithium-ion batteries.

The energy storage system should be able to supply up to 500,000 households with electricity for two hours. In operation, it will temporarily store surplus electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar power and feed it into the grid as required - especially at times of low generation and high demand.

"An energy storage facility will be built in Förderstedt that will triple the capacity and performance of the previous largest storage facility in Bollingstedt," explains Georg Gallmetzer, Managing Director of Eco Stor. The town of Staßfurt is therefore aiming to become climate-neutral by 2045. According to the company, the storage facility is a key element in achieving this goal.

Financing entirely from own funds

Before the actual construction can begin, construction companies are currently securing the access roads, setting up construction roads and creating space for materials and machinery. Following this, excavators will begin with the earthworks, as Eco Stor explains: They will dig trenches for supply lines, pour foundations and prepare the ground for the container modules. The battery containers will later be installed in several stages. According to Eco Stor, approval has been granted for the start of construction. The ecological requirements for the site have also already been implemented.

The project is being financed entirely from Eco Stor's own funds. Public funding will not be used, according to information from Kirchheim. The municipality of Staßfurt with its 23,000 inhabitants, on the other hand, benefits from trade tax revenues: 90 percent of the tax payments remain with the municipality. According to the company, Eco Stor played a key role in advocating this new regulation for the apportionment of trade tax in order to enable greater participation at municipal level.

According to the company's website, Eco Stor is one of the few players on the market to implement the development, construction and operation of large-scale storage projects from a single source. The group of shareholders includes the Spanish developer X-Elio, the investment company Nature Infrastructure Capital (NIC) and the Norwegian energy supplier A Energi.
