"Energie Miesbacher Land" is to be the name of a new energy supplier in Bavaria. 15 municipalities, Energie Südbayern and E-Werk Tegernsee are cooperating.

Shaping the future of energy locally, finding regional answers to the increasingly complex requirements of the energy world - this is what 15 Upper Bavarian municipalities want to do with a joint venture. Together with the regional energy suppliers Energie Südbayern (ESB) and E-Werk Tegernsee, they are founding the GmbH "Energie Miesbacher Land". The foundation is planned for 2026, according to a statement from ESB.

The shareholders of the new company will be the municipalities of Bad Wiessee, Bayrischzell, Fischbachau, Gmund, Hausham, Holzkirchen, Irschenberg, Kreuth, Miesbach, Rottach-Egern, Schliersee, Tegernsee, Valley, Waakirchen and Warngau. They will hold 55.5 percent of the shares. ESB will reportedly hold a 26.6 percent stake, with E-Werk Tegernsee accounting for 17.9 percent.

The joint venture will focus on the "sale of green electricity to private households, commercial enterprises and municipal facilities", according to the statement. In addition, renewable energy generation projects and the expansion of the charging infrastructure for electric cars are planned in the region.

Step towards "more self-determination"

"We mayors quickly agreed that this is the right step - the company offers opportunities and allows us to influence the energy industry in the interests of the people here in the district," said Miesbach's first mayor Gerhard Braunmiller (CSU) after a working meeting with his counterparts on October 13. With this step, the municipalities want to achieve "more self-determination in energy supply" and provide citizens with "secure, sustainable and affordable energy" in the long term.

"The model works," says ESB project manager Nina Werner. "Energie Miesbacher Land is already the eighth electricity holding company of Energie Südbayern GmbH". The concept offers advantages and synergies: "The municipalities have a direct influence on shaping the local energy future and the added value remains in the region. At the same time, the energy suppliers provide the necessary expertise," says Werner.

Thüga and Stadtwerke München are each 50 percent shareholders in ESB. E-Werk Tegernsee is 98 percent owned by Tegernseer Kur- und Versorgungsbetriebe (TKV) - a company owned by the town.
