Johannes Riedl studied mathematics and physics at the LMU in Munich and finalized his PhD in mathematics at the Technical University in Munich in 2001. Afterwards he joined Siemens Information and Communication Networks as R&D engineer. There he was responsible for the development of innovative carrier network design concepts focusing on IP/Ethernet technologies.

Joining Siemens Corporate Technology in July 2005, he was leading between 2006 and 2022 the Research Group ‚Industrial Networks’ focusing on wired communication network technologies for industrial networks in all Siemens business areas. Since September 2022 he is heading the Research Group "Industrial Networks & Wireless" which consists of three portfolio elements "Deterministic Communication & Edge Networks", "5G/6G/Wireless" and "Network Intelligence & Localization".
