PD Dr. Frank Sauer studied political science, sociology, philosophy and law at Goethe University Frankfurt, where he also obtained his doctorate (Dr. phil.). He habilitated at the University of the Federal Armed Forces Munich and received the venia legendi for political science. He has been a private lecturer (PD) since February 2023.

Frank Sauer researches and publishes on issues of international politics, in particular the relationship between technology and security. He has a particular focus on nuclear weapons and the use of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) in the military.

His expertise and many years of experience in science communication make Frank Sauer a sought-after dialog partner on issues relating to the nexus between technology, society and security. He regularly appears on talk shows, gives lectures and takes part in panel discussions with a high public profile.

Frank Sauer shares his knowledge with decision-makers in companies, the public in the form of interviews and opinion pieces, members of the German Bundestag in expert hearings and with the international community at the United Nations in Geneva.

Through his membership in numerous expert and advisory bodies, Frank Sauer has an excellent Europe-wide and international network (e.g. Weimar Task Force on the European Security Order (Körber Foundation), US-Germany Renewal Initiative (Atlantic Council), International Committee for Robot Arms Control, International Panel on the Regulation of Autonomous Weapons, WG Technology Responsibility for the European armaments project "Future Combat Air System"). He supports the "Aquila ascendens" science prize as a member of the scientific committee.

Together with Ulrike Franke (ECFR), Carlo Masala (Universität der Bundeswehr München) and Thomas Wiegold (augengeradeaus.net), Frank Sauer regularly discusses current developments in German security and defense policy as well as the situation in Europe and the world in the multi-award-winning podcast "Sicherheitshalber".
