Profile

We are living on the threshold of the age of quantum sensors and quantum computers. These devices require low temperatures below 1 Kelvin (-272.15°C) to operate. Currently, the extremely rare gas helium-3 is used together with helium-4 to operate the necessary cooling systems. However, helium is a scarce fossil resource whose constantly decreasing availability is leading to price hikes and supply bottlenecks. In view of the growth market of quantum technology, a sustainable, helium-free cooling process is needed: adiabatic demagnetization cooling.

At the University of Augsburg, materials have been developed and patented that achieve the temperatures below 20 mK required for superconducting quantum technology with high cooling performance and are very robust. Solidcryo has set itself the goal of further developing these materials and establishing and commercializing high-quality measurement technology for low-temperature applications.
