Information
The mobile use of fuel cells places high demands on their cost targets, reliability and power densities. These can only be realized by using thin metallic bipolar plates, which are preferably made of stainless steel, but also of aluminum and titanium alloys.
The serious disadvantage of metallic bipolar plates is the lack of stability against corrosion caused by electrochemical processes, which leads to a very limited lifetime of the fuel cells. For this reason, the coating of metallic bipolar plates is essential. PT&B SILCOR GmbH uses double-pulse magnetron sputtering (a special PVD process) for this purpose. The coating is composed of a large number of thin layers in the nanometer range, consisting of various metals, metal nitrides and the modified, highly conductive carbon SilCor®GR.
These coatings are characterized by the following properties:
- Corrosion resistance and diffusion tightness .
- High electrical conductivity and low contact resistance,
