The system of universities in which special courses of study have received recognition as elite courses, as centers of excellence, also exists in the skilled trades. The competence center of the Chamber of Crafts has been classified by the Federal Ministry of Economics as a center of excellence for manufacturing technology and innovation management, which offers interested companies not only courses but also consulting and testing services in areas such as CAD/CAM/CNC technology, machining technology, energy and environmental technology, automation, multimedia or service engineering. Close cooperation exists with manufacturing companies as well as the Competence Center for New Materials and the Fraunhofer Project Group at the University of Bayreuth. In its current state of expansion, the competence center comprises a technology park for more than 20 different professions and various cross-sectional technologies. Since 1998, the HWK has been certified as an overall company according to DIN EN ISO 9001.

The Chamber of Skilled Crafts for Upper Franconia occupies a nationally recognized pioneering position in the field of new technologies. In its current state of expansion, the competence center of the Chamber of Crafts comprises a technology park for more than 20 different professions and a wide variety of cross-sectional technologies. Keywords are: CAD / CAM / CNC technology, laser technology, energy and environmental technology, automation, multimedia, sensor technology, service engineering, hydraulics and pneumatics.
