Funding conditions

What is supported?

The funding is intended to support companies in research and development projects in the field of innovative drive technologies for mobile applications and to accelerate the use of these pioneering technologies in ground, water and air transportation.

The funding covers the following topics and issues in particular:

  • Engine technology, in particular hydrogen and electric engines
  • Highly efficient transmission technology
  • Energy and thermal management
  • Hybrid technology (fuel cells)
  • Tank and storage technologies, in particular battery technology (solid-state battery)
  • Systems for the improved use of the above-mentioned drive technologies

Who is supported?

Eligible to apply are

  • Companies based or established in the Free State of Bavaria,
  • Non-university research institutions as well as universities and higher education institutions in Bavaria,
  • other applicants based or established in the Free State of Bavaria that have the technical qualifications and sufficient capacity to successfully complete the tasks described in the project.

Consortia consisting of at least 2 partners are eligible for funding. The consortium must include at least one commercial partner (company) that is also responsible for the commercial exploitation of the development.

Preference will be given to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in accordance with Annex I of the GBER.

How is funding provided?

Funding is provided as partial funding in the form of grants as part of project funding.
An appropriate own contribution is assumed, so that the (non-supplementary) funding rate generally does not exceed 50% of the eligible expenditure of the joint project.

Expenditure from the following cost groups can be funded:

  • Personnel costs
Only technical permanent staff are eligible for funding. Personnel expenses should outweigh other project-related expenses.
  • Other operating expenses
Material and consumables that are directly attributable to the project.
  • Expenditure on contract research and technical knowledge
Technical knowledge and property rights acquired directly or under license from third parties. Consulting or equivalent services can also be applied for here.
  • Costs for instruments and equipment
Items that are capitalized and therefore also depreciated. This means that only a proportionate useful life of the project is eligible for funding.
  • Travel costs (only for research institutions)
Travel costs can only be claimed by universities/research institutions for the funded project personnel.

What requirements must be met?

Outlines can only be submitted after a call for funding has been published.

Projects can be considered if they

  • go beyond the state of the art,
  • are characterized by a high degree of innovation
  • are associated with a considerable technical and economic risk and
  • are carried out in substantial parts in Bavaria.

Projects that

  • have already been started before the Bavarian project management organization has received a verifiable application,
  • are essentially carried out on behalf of third parties not involved in the collaborative project.

The following also applies:

  • At least one of the partners substantially involved in the project must already have specific research and development capacities and relevant technical experience, in the case of companies also in the area of production, at the time the application is submitted.
  • Applicants or project participants must demonstrably use an appropriate amount of their own or external funds to finance the project, which are not financed by other public funding or subsidized.
  • Applicants must have sufficient creditworthiness to carry out the project and be able to prove this.
  • The commercial partner(s) should account for the majority of the eligible expenditure of the consortium.

Details on the requirements can be found in the respective call for funding and the guidelines (see downloads) .
