Novel spinning technology for nano- to microstructured fiber surfaces

02.10.2024

A novel spinning technology for the production of nano-, submicro- and microstructured fiber surfaces for technical and medical applications was developed in a research project. A bicomponent process is used to produce yarns from a polymer core and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a sheath. When the temporary sheath component PVA is removed, structured surfaces from the nano to the micro range are created. This method improves fiber-matrix adhesion without resorting to costly chemical treatments. The research shows promising results for use in areas such as biomedicine and technical textiles.
