Just outside Munich in Bad Tölz, new space for companies and a technology transfer center for Munich University of Applied Sciences is being built on the campus toelz site.
Campus Toelz offers high-quality rental space for companies and promotes an ambitious network in the Bavarian Oberland, especially for companies in the technology field of "new materials". As an independent investor, Technologie Park Tölz Grundstücksgesellschaft mbH is developing the campus, which also houses the Munich University of Applied Sciences' technology transfer center in the first construction phase. This partnership enables close cooperation between science and entrepreneurship, which offers promising potential for both areas.
In this interview, we welcome the Managing Director of TIZIO, Ingrid Wildemann-Dominguez, and Mr. Laurenz Breyer, Managing Director of campus toelz.
Mr. Breyer, what interests you about the partnership with the New Materials Cluster and what expectations do you have?
Laurenz Breyer: The topic of "new materials" is an absolute future topic for many industries, such as aerospace, pharmaceuticals, environmental technology and construction.
We got to know Bayern Innovativ and the New Materials Cluster through Dr. Seßner. We were immediately enthusiastic about being part of a strong community. We can imagine establishing the "New Materials" technology field with the right companies in our region. We value the dialog between cluster members as well as the opportunity to keep up to date with the latest technologies and innovations
Mr. Breyer, what is the particular focus of the campus toelz project and what is the motivation behind it?
Laurenz Breyer: Our motivation is to create a place with valuable space for medium-sized and larger companies, especially those with excellent expertise in research and development and a strong focus on technology. We are open to the ideas and visions of companies and, as an independent investor, offer a great deal of flexibility in terms of implementation.
We see a great opportunity to strengthen the regional economy and contribute to the transfer between science and business.
Our first construction phase will also include the premises of the Technology Transfer Center of Munich University of Applied Sciences. We are excited about this partnership and the resulting potential for collaboration between science and business.
What advantages does Bad Tölz offer as a location for companies wishing to set up here?
Laurenz Breyer: Bad Tölz offers an attractive environment in close proximity to the mountains and on the doorstep of Munich. A unique density of companies, many technology clusters and educational and research institutions offer companies ideal networks in the Munich metropolitan region.
The high quality of life and good infrastructure make our location particularly attractive for companies and their employees. The combination of living and working in such an environment is a desirable alternative and is becoming increasingly important.
With projects such as ours or the "Moralt site", Bad Tölz has what it takes to develop into an ideal location for companies and living in the coming years. We see great opportunities here.
What are the long-term plans for the Tölz campus?
Laurenz Breyer: In the long term, we want to establish a strong network together with our tenants and partners and make the campus toelz brand known beyond the Oberland region.
Our aim is to promote sustainable development and create an environment in which technology-oriented companies can work together successfully. By creating a collaborative network and supporting research and development, we want to strengthen the region as an attractive location for innovative companies.
What can companies expect from the space on campus toelz?
Laurenz Breyer: Our space is modern and flexibly designed to meet the different needs of companies for assembly, simulation or collaborative project work, for example. In the first construction phase, we are building high-quality space in KfW40 construction, which is divided into office and hall space. For example, our tenant, Munich University of Applied Sciences, has used TIZIO to divide the space in one hall into a total of 4 laboratories. A total of 3 building sections are planned, which together comprise approx. 18,000 m² gross floor area.
What is TIZIO and what does the term stand for?
Ingrid Wildemann-Dominguez: TIZIO Transfer and Innovation Center in the Oberland is the technology transfer center of the Munich University of Applied Sciences, which we are building in Bad Tölz as a tenant on the campus toelz. Together with companies from the Oberland region, we would like to carry out research and development projects and, as a university of applied sciences, make our contribution to an innovative and competitive region.
What topics do you focus on in TIZIO?
Ingrid Wildemann-Dominguez: There will be four laboratories for our research and development activities in TIZIO: Automation/ Robotics, IoT Prototypes, Additive Manufacturing and our social science Living Lab Tourism, Sustainability and Quality of Life. The subject areas have been developed in line with the region. Our topics are not industry-specific, but are used in a wide variety of companies.
And how can people work with you?
Ingrid Wildemann-Dominguez: Contact us with your R&D question. We will then discuss the topic together and consider how we can find a solution for your in-house R&D requirements. Of course, the financing of the project also plays a role and we will assess its suitability for research funding. However, this is not a one-way street, i.e. our professors have a research idea and are looking for a suitable practical partner in the region.
When does it start?
Ingrid Wildemann-Dominguez: Our premises on campus toelz are now under construction in summer 2024, but we are nevertheless already working on our first projects with companies from the region. We have found that the companies in the Oberland are a very good fit for us as a university of applied sciences and are delighted with the exciting projects.
