Digital product passport and carbon footprint: new requirements, new opportunities for the manufacturing industry

Roadshow on 09 March in Nuremberg, organized by "Forum Digitale Technologien" and "Der Mittelstand. BVMW e.V." - Innovation Network Production as a partner on site

The EU Ecodesign Regulation brings the Digital Product Passport (DPP) and new CO₂ requirements. The roadshow on March 9, 2026 in Nuremberg will show practical solutions for SMEs.

With the EU Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products (ESPR), new transparency and sustainability requirements are gradually coming into force. The central instrument is the Digital Product Passport (DPP), which will become mandatory for the first product groups - such as batteries - from 2027 .
For companies, this not only means additional obligations, but also strategic opportunities: structured product and CO₂ data creates a new basis for efficiency, market presence and data-based business models.

Why the Digital Product Passport is relevant now

In future, the DPP will bundle all key product information digitally - from materials and repair and recycling information to sustainability data and carbon footprint.
The key benefits for the industry:

  • Legal compliance with current and future EU requirements
  • Seamless transparency along the value chain
  • More efficient processes in service, maintenance, quality management and reporting
  • Competitive advantages in tenders and customer discussions
  • Basis for new services, e.g. digital twins, predictive maintenance or component passports

For medium-sized companies in particular, early entry is a decisive factor in efficiently mastering documentation and sustainability requirements.

CO₂ footprint as a core requirement
The product carbon footprint (PCF) is becoming an integral part of modern product data. Digital solutions enable standardized recording and verification - a must for the ecological transformation of the manufacturing industry.
Projects such as CliCE DiPP, de:karb and ProDiNA are already demonstrating in practice how CO₂ transparency and digital twins can be used industrially.
