The Group is entering the field of electricity procurement for other companies via its energy company Elli.
The Volkswagen Group is expanding the business area of its energy company Elli and entering the field of electricity procurement for external companies. Elli is thus offering energy trading as a service product and positioning itself as a "partner for a structured and sustainable power supply", according to a statement from Elli.
In future, companies will be able to use Elli to organize their electricity procurement. The offer includes the structuring of energy requirements and the use of market access on the Epex Spot electricity exchange. Elli acquired the necessary license in 2023 and has since carried out a test phase. The company is now opening up its trading activities to third parties.
Over a period of several months, the company tested electricity trading in a pilot operation using a specially developed smart energy platform. This enables the automated integration of flexible assets - such as stationary battery storage systems - into the electricity market. "Based on these successful tests, the trading team was expanded - Elli now trades 24/7 on the short-term market."
Professional risk management
According to its own statements, Elli aims to impress above all with its solid financial resources and professional risk management. "Managing market price risks requires efficient partners with very good creditworthiness - Volkswagen Group Charging can play to its strengths here as a dynamic company within the Volkswagen Group," says the company.
Giovanni Palazzo, CEO of Elli: "With the step from proprietary trading to energy services, Elli and the Volkswagen Group are opening up new business areas in a rapidly growing market environment." The company plans to announce further information at the IAA Mobility 2025 motor show in Munich at the beginning of September.
Elli was founded in 2018 and is the car manufacturer's energy subsidiary based in Berlin. In addition to retail, the company develops products for charging electric vehicles, from charging points at home to public charging solutions. The aim is to offer the charging experience and energy supply for customers from a single source.
