District heating can provide climate-neutral heating for around a third of all homes in Germany by 2045 - especially in cities and conurbations. In order to adapt the heating networks to this demand, investments need to be doubled to around 5 billion euros per year.
Connecting to the heating network makes it possible to switch many households to climate-neutral heating in one fell swoop. According to calculations by Agora Energiewende, a third of homes can be supplied with district heating by 2045. However, this will require a rapid expansion and conversion of the heating network and a change in generation.
A study by Agora Energiewende shows how the rapid expansion and conversion of networks and socially acceptable pricing for households can be achieved. The study recommends a number of measures to provide district heating suppliers with an economic framework and enable attractive prices for customers. In particular, lower electricity costs and a secure funding framework are decisive levers for accelerating the climate-neutral transformation of district heating.
