As the temperature rises, so does electricity consumption. Mainova in Frankfurt/Main reports the highest consumption this year for the hot July 2 with a daily peak load of 850 MW.
On July 2, the summer temperature on the River Main rose to 38.4 degrees Celsius. At the same time, electricity consumption in the Frankfurt city area reached its highest level of the year to date, as the energy supplier Mainova announced on July 7.
As the responsible grid operator, the Mainova subsidiary NRM Netzdienste Rhein-Main registered a daily peak load of over 850 megawatts in its grid area on this day. In previous years, this value for the highest power demand within one day was just over 800 MW, according to the company.
Mainova attributes the significant load increases to increasing digitalization and decarbonization as well as population growth. According to Mainova CEO Peter Arnold, the new load peak last Wednesday was due to the very high temperatures with the corresponding need for cooling. "Even without the heatwave, Frankfurt's electricity demand has been rising sharply for years," he said. This is why Mainova is investing heavily in the city's existing electricity grid. Arnold considers it to be one of the most powerful in Germany.
