A new grid node is to secure the power supply in eastern Saxony. Sachsen Netze is launching a construction project in the district of Görlitz, which should be completed by 2027.

SachsenNetze GmbH, the grid operator for electricity and gas and a subsidiary of SachsenEnergie, has started construction of a new grid node in the district of Görlitz. On August 25, representatives of the company joined local politicians in the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony.

According to the Dresden-based network operator, it is investing 17 million euros in the construction of the network node. According to a press release from the company, the plant will increase the capacity of the high-voltage grid in the district of Görlitz. This will allow more renewable energy plants to be connected and will also make it possible to supply additional consumers. The background to this is the growing demand for electricity from industry, households and the increasing electrification of transportation and heat supply.

The grid node is located in the municipality of Horka, not far from the Polish border. The grid operator chose it because it is in the immediate vicinity of existing high-voltage lines. On an area of 1.5 hectares - almost the size of two soccer pitches - switch panels for eight high-voltage line systems and couplings are being built. There are also plans to connect to the extra-high-voltage grid in the future, according to reports from Dresden. Sachsen Netze plans to put the plant into operation at the end of 2027.

According to Managing Director Steffen Heine, not only industrial companies will benefit from the grid expansion, but also operators of small photovoltaic systems. At the ground-breaking ceremony, District Administrator Stephan Meyer (CDU) emphasized that a modern high-voltage grid creates the basis for investment and added value in the region.

The Horka grid node is part of a long-term grid expansion strategy. Sachsen Netze is planning to optimize and renew 170 kilometers of high-voltage lines by 2028. In addition, 20 substations are to be expanded, according to the statement. Further measures on 125 kilometers of lines and 29 substations are to follow between 2029 and 2033. By 2045, extensive renovations are planned for an additional 280 kilometers of lines and 25 substations.
