The Munich-based IT service provider and TOP 6 finalist of the Bavarian Energy Start-up SPiNE has developed a network management system for monitoring smart meter gateways together with smart meter gateway manufacturer Theben.

According to a statement from Theben Smart Energy, the new network management system is a cloud-based platform. Central monitoring and, if necessary, error analysis of the gateways is one of the key functions. In addition, real-time data on the connection status and signal strength is available, which can shorten the installation process.

Tina Hadler, Head of Sales at Theben Smart Energy, describes the network management system as an "important advancement in the ramp-up of the smart meter rollout". It lays the foundation for early detection of problems and sustainable optimization of the installation process.

The new IT solution is now being used by metering service provider Smartoptimo in pilot projects at Stadtwerke Bocholt and Stadtwerke Witten.
The system is basically manufacturer-independent and therefore compatible with the smart meter gateways of various providers. Due to the development cooperation with Theben Smart Energy, an initial technical integration for their gateways was carried out. According to the press release, communication between the gateway and server takes place using the lightweight M2M protocol.

The platform was developed under the leadership of Munich-based clean-tech start-up Spine. The company, which was founded in February 2024, also operates the IT solution and hosts the server infrastructure. The IT start-up also provides the web-based application for metering point operators and their service providers, such as Smartoptimo.

In addition to the network management system, Spine also offers a solution for CLS management to implement Section 14a of the German Energy Industry Act (EnWG) - i.e. for controlling low-voltage consumption systems. The start-up has also developed a home energy management platform to optimize the interaction of PV systems, storage systems, heat pumps and wallboxes for end customers.
