The car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is entering the bidirectional charging business with its e-cars from next year.

Mercedes-Benz is offering bidirectional charging for e-car users who charge their vehicle at home via a wallbox. According to Mercedes, a corresponding solution called "MB.CHARGE Home" will be launched on the market in the course of 2026. The technology partner is "The Mobility House".

The first Mercedes vehicle will be the all-electric GLC, with other models such as the new CLA series to follow. The plan is to launch in Germany, France and the UK. "Further markets will be developed step by step."

The core of the offer is the integration of the vehicle into a digital charging system. A bidirectional wallbox is provided via The Mobility House, which also enables access to the energy market. The partner also provides a green electricity tariff with a feed-in tariff. Advice, installation and commissioning are coordinated from a single source.

The "MB.CHARGE Home Pro Intelligent" system adds bidirectional functions to the standard solution. This allows the vehicle to feed electricity from its battery back into the grid at times of high electricity prices and low availability. In this way, the car becomes an active energy source.

System takes departure times into account

The offer is based on "MB.CHARGE Home". There, the car is only charged with electricity, but does not feed any back into the grid. The system takes into account departure times and the desired charging status of the vehicle and specifically shifts the charging process to periods with particularly favorable tariffs - usually at night or when there is a high feed-in from renewable energies.

The system is controlled via a smartphone app. The system controls all processes. "It is also planned that the vehicle can be used in future in conjunction with a compatible bidirectional wallbox as an energy source for the home in an existing back-up power system," it continues.

With this step, Mercedes-Benz says it is positioning itself for the first time in the passenger car segment for bidirectional charging. "Mercedes-Benz supplies the digital charging ecosystem networked with the vehicle, The Mobility House supplies the appropriate green electricity tariff and the connection to the energy market. This means that all charging processes at home are powered 100 percent by electricity from renewable sources," explained Franz Reiner, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz Mobility AG.
