The Chinese technology company Huawei is no longer a member of the European solar association Solar Power Europe - by force.
The controversial Chinese technology company Huawei has been officially excluded from the European solar association. The reason given is the EU Commission's allegations of corruption against the company, which supplies inverters and controllers for PV systems as well as telecommunications equipment.
"The Board of Solar Power Europe took the decision to exclude Huawei on April 28, 2025. This decision has now been implemented." This was announced by a spokesperson for the association at the request of the editorial team. The board's decision then became official in a final vote on May 5.
According to various media reports, there are concrete corruption investigations against Huawei with allegations of influencing people connected to the European Parliament. According to the Belgian public prosecutor's office responsible, the company is accused of exerting undue influence on political decision-making processes in the EU Parliament. Arrests have already been made.
"Solar Power Europe's decision is linked to the Commission's decision to restrict meetings with associations that have Huawei as a member," the spokesperson continued. At the end of April, the EU Commission announced that it would significantly reduce its cooperation with Huawei and its affiliated organizations.
The Commission will no longer meet with lobby groups and trade associations that represent Huawei's political interests, a spokesperson for the EU Commission told Politico magazine. It is further stated that the EU Commission will examine this on an "ad hoc basis".
The company is said to have close ties to Chinese government agencies. Critics are concerned that there could be a risk of espionage activities, particularly when using its technologies in the context of network expansion, for example in the area of 5G network technology for mobile communications. Huawei firmly rejects these accusations.
