Siemens Energy plans to invest one billion US dollars in the expansion of its manufacturing capacities in the USA over the next few years. 1,500 new employees are to be hired.

Siemens Energy is investing one billion euros in the USA. The background to Siemens Energy's investment offensive is the fact that the USA is currently experiencing an unprecedented increase in electricity demand.

The rapid expansion of data centers and AI infrastructure as well as the increasing electrification of industry are causing consumption to rise sharply. In order to meet this demand, the country needs to modernize and expand its grid infrastructure while also creating additional generation capacity. The German manufacturer of energy and power plant technology is also a global leader in both areas.

The measures now announced primarily include the expansion of existing factories. This involves additional capacities for the production and maintenance of transformers as well as the local production of several large gas turbines. However, the main production in this area is to remain in Berlin. In addition, a new plant is planned in the state of Mississippi to manufacture key components for the electricity grid.

1,500 new jobs planned

"All investments are geared towards an efficient and market-oriented expansion of capacity in order to avoid overcapacities in the long term," according to a company statement. Siemens Energy plans to hire around 1,500 new employees at its US locations in the coming years - primarily in the areas of production, operations and engineering. The focus will be on training and further education programs based on the German model.

"Siemens Energy has been manufacturing in the United States for more than a century - and we are currently experiencing the kind of extraordinary growth that rarely happens. The upswing in US industry and the rapid growth in the field of artificial intelligence are driving this development significantly," commented Christian Bruch, CEO of Siemens Energy, on the investment decision.

"The US government is clearly prioritizing energy security, a reliable and resilient power grid and the expansion of industrial jobs. As a result, energy demand is increasing significantly and new investments are being made throughout the energy sector. We want to benefit from this momentum - because ultimately the resulting orders and investments will also benefit our German plants."

Active in the USA for more than 100 years

The USA is one of Siemens Energy's most important markets. According to Siemens Energy, 29 percent of its orders in the last fiscal year came from the USA. The company has been active in the United States since 1887, when it opened its first production site in Pittsburgh. Today, Siemens Energy employs more than 12,000 people at 25 locations in the USA, including eight manufacturing plants. According to the company, around a quarter of US electricity generation is based on technology from Siemens Energy.

The individual investments:

  • In Mississippi, Siemens Energy is building a new plant for high-voltage switchgear. Up to 300 new employees are to be hired there. A modern training center for the targeted qualification of specialists is also being built at the plant.
  • Siemens Energy is expanding three sites in North Carolina. In Charlotte, the production and service capacities for large transformers will be expanded and the production of large gas turbines will be resumed on a smaller scale.
  • In Winston-Salem, the production of gas turbine components will be expanded, while in Raleigh the focus will be on expanding project management, design, sales and research and development in the field of grid technologies.
  • In Florida, the plant in Tampa is being expanded for the production of gas turbine blades and guide vanes - key components in the supply chain that also supply the Berlin plant, for example. At the Orlando site, Siemens Energy is expanding its research and development capacities in the company's innovation center, including a new laboratory for digital grid technologies with artificial intelligence.
  • At the Fort Payne site in Alabama, Siemens Energy is expanding the production of copper and insulation components for generators.
  • In Painted Post (New York) and Houston (Texas), Siemens Energy is modernizing its sites for the production and maintenance of compressor units used in pipeline systems.
