Share of e-cars in new registrations continues to grow

Figures for the first six months of the current year show that Never before have so many e-cars been registered in the first half of a year as from January to June 2025.
At the middle of the year, the Federal Motor Transport Authority reported 248,726 newly registered passenger cars with a purely battery electric drive (BEV). This not only exceeds the previous year's figure of 184,125 vehicles, but also the comparable period in 2023 with the most new registrations of e-cars to date, according to a statement from the authority.
Accordingly, the share of BEVs in the total number of new passenger car registrations - around 1.4 million cars in the first six months - was 17.7 percent. However, there was a 4.7% decline in new registrations across all drive types compared to the first half of 2024.
If plug-in hybrids and fuel cell vehicles are also included, the total comes to 387,674 registrations, which corresponds to 27.6% of newly registered cars.
Major growth at Ford
Most battery-electric cars were newly registered in Bavaria. A figure of 50,714 was recorded for the Free State. North Rhine-Westphalia follows in second place with 50,558 units and Baden-Württemberg in third place with 38,699 BEVs. The highest number of new hybrid registrations was also in Bavaria (117,931). In this category too, North Rhine-Westphalia (108,043) and Baden-Württemberg (82,407) are in second and third place.
According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority, the average CO2 emissions of 109.6 g/km were 11.1 percent lower than in the same period last year.
In addition to the drive types, the Federal Motor Transport Authority also looks at the individual car brands. Among domestic manufacturers, VW is in the lead with 52,445 new BEV registrations. It is followed by BMW (22,583) and Audi (19,632). The import brands are led by Skoda with 22,370 new registrations. Second place goes to Seat (16,299) and third place to Hyundai (12,963).
Ford recorded the largest increase among domestic manufacturers with 348.3 percent. This is followed by the absolute number of 6,922 e-cars. BYD, on the other hand, "only" achieved an increase of 290.0 percent. The Chinese manufacturer recorded 4,544 new registrations. Tesla is represented in the statistics with 8,890 new registrations in the first half of the year. Compared to the same period last year, this represents a drop of around 58 percent.
