Ikea Germany is expanding its charging infrastructure together with Mer. Over 1,000 new charging points are to be installed at 54 stores to promote electromobility.

Ikea Germany is increasingly focusing on sustainable mobility and is planning the expansion of more than 1,000 new charging points together with the charging solution provider Mer. The charging infrastructure is to be installed at the 54 German stores and other locations. The aim is to "create a nationwide charging infrastructure in a few years that customers, employees and delivery fleets can use". According to the company, this should enable annual savings of around 71,000 tons of CO2.

The Swedish furniture store already operates charging stations with green electricity and says it saves almost 4,000 tons of CO2 every year as a result. Ikea sees the planned expansion of charging points as a further step towards climate-friendly mobility. "We want to actively promote electromobility in Germany so that it becomes established more quickly," says Walter Kadnar, Country Manager and Chief Sustainability Officer at Ikea Germany. Sustainability is a central component of the corporate strategy.

Network capacity as a challenge

However, the expansion of the charging infrastructure faces challenges. According to Ikea, there is a lack of sufficient network capacity at many German locations, which could delay the implementation originally planned for 2028. However, Kadnar emphasizes that the company is determined to develop solutions together with politicians and the energy industry in order to implement the charging points as quickly as possible.

A pilot project has already been implemented at the Berlin-Waltersdorf site. The first new charging park was opened there, offering a comprehensive charging service for customers, employees and the delivery fleet. In December last year, Ikea expanded the charging points there to 24 together with the service provider Mer. According to Ikea, over 95% of customer deliveries in Berlin are already electric.

Members of the "Ikea Family" and the "Ikea Business Network" receive charging power via the Mer charging app at a 20 percent discount compared to non-registered customers: Ikea members currently pay 0.49 euros/kWh for charging at normal charging stations (AC) and 0.69 euros/kWh at hyperfast charging stations (HPC) via the app.

Sustainable energy solutions for the home

In addition to the expansion of the public charging infrastructure, the Swedes are also increasingly offering their customers energy solutions for the private sector. In cooperation with the Swedish company Svea Solar, Ikea sells photovoltaic systems and wall boxes for charging at home. The range is set to grow further in the future in order to make renewable energy accessible to as many people as possible.
