The European energy sector is in the midst of a historic transformation - driven by geopolitical developments, ambitious climate targets and rapidly advancing technologies.

Innovation is no longer an option, but a strategic necessity.

To understand how companies are mastering this change, V_labs conducted the Energy Innovation Survey 2025. 87 energy companies across Europe were surveyed - including utilities, grid operators, oil and gas companies and clean-tech scale-ups.

The results show a clear picture: While many companies are still stuck in the pilot phase, the leading innovators are already succeeding in generating significant revenue from new business initiatives.

Three success factors stand out in particular:

  • Fixed innovation budget - market leaders invest at least EUR 5-10 million annually and thus focus on long-term commitment rather than individual projects.
  • Clearly defined KPIs - impact is consistently measured. Performance indicators guide decisions and ensure a link to business results.
  • Collaboration as a principle - Successful companies work across departmental boundaries and cooperate closely with start-ups to increase speed and scale.

The full report also highlights

  • the key drivers of innovation in the energy sector,
  • the structures of corporate venturing units,
  • existing capability and cultural barriers,
  • as well as six strategic recommendations on how companies can make the step from vision to implementation.
