The town of Feuchtwangen officially kicked off a pioneering hydrogen project with a ground-breaking ceremony in the West II industrial estate.

Representatives from politics, business and science attended the kick-off for the construction of an innovative electrolyzer for the production of green hydrogen.

Sandro Kirchner, Member of the Bavarian Parliament and State Secretary at the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, Sport and Integration, praised the project as an important step towards a secure, affordable and sustainable energy supply. The plant is the first of its kind in Middle Franconia and is being supported with five million euros from the Bavarian BayFELI funding program. It is considered a central component of the Bavarian hydrogen strategy.

The electrolyzer will have an output of five megawatts and is set to produce up to 650 tons of green hydrogen per year from the end of 2026. The project is embedded in the town's holistic energy concept, which intelligently combines photovoltaics, wind energy, storage technologies and hydrogen and promotes regional value creation.

Feuchtwangen's First Mayor Patrick Ruh emphasized the pioneering nature of the project: "The electrolyser is a deliberate risk, but at the same time a decisive step towards a sustainable energy supply in the town and region. In addition to the funding, a long-term secured purchase agreement for the green hydrogen is a key success factor.

The project is being implemented by H2 Hub nahKRAFT GmbH, a joint venture between the city's nahKRAFT GmbH and IFSEC Green H2 AG, with INP Deutschland GmbH responsible for planning. The hydrogen produced is to be used primarily in the mobility sector - a hydrogen-powered wheel loader was presented as an example of this at the ground-breaking ceremony.

The Energy Lounge online event with VK Energie GmbH took place on January 27, 2026. In this format, our partners from the Energy Technology Cluster regularly present their topics, projects and innovative products.
