Textile fibers from straw

03/08/2023

Sustainable materials are becoming increasingly important in the textile industry. As part of the CRF-Sraw research project, researchers at the University of Hamburg want to work together with fiber experts to make agricultural residues usable for fiber production. The funding is provided by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture and runs until the end of 2024.

The extraction of cellulose-containing textile fibers (e.g. viscose or lyocell) has so far been carried out almost exclusively from pulp, which is obtained from wood. Wheat straw is now to serve as a new additional raw material source, since the pulp yield from one kilogram of straw is around 40%. In addition, the plants grow back quickly and the energy and chemical consumption for fiber pulping can also be handled with little effort.
