The Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (DBU) is continuing its funding initiative "Storage and grids - decentralized seasonal electricity storage and grid-supporting innovations", which was launched in September 2024.
The aim is to develop innovative storage solutions for surplus electricity from renewable energies as well as sustainable concepts for grid control and load flexibilization.
The first funded projects include AI-optimized battery storage systems, innovative high-temperature heat storage systems and metal/metal oxide-based storage technologies. In addition to traditional funding opportunities, there is now also an ideas competition: applicants with promising concepts can receive start-up funding of up to 15,000 euros for six months to further develop their idea. Particularly exciting approaches can then receive further funding.
There have also been successes from the world of science: students from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and the Technical University of Munich presented an idea on "Storage and Networks" as part of the Digital Future Challenge and took first place.
Interested parties can still submit project outlines. The DBU will present a further interim report on the funding initiative at the "Smarter E Europe" trade fair in Munich at the beginning of May.
