In the middle of Munich: Five hectares of space for ideas and projects. Not just a wish, but a reality. On the site of the former Luitpold barracks between Neuhausen, Schwabing and the city center, there is a lively scene that has been creating and cultivating diverse and interdisciplinary creative spaces for years.
Artists run studios and open workshops here, as do designers. There are rehearsal and performance stages for the independent performing arts as well as facilities and initiatives for artistic and cultural education. Socio-ecological start-ups research and test alternative social models. Performances, exhibitions, workshops and concerts are regularly developed, supervised and organized throughout the site. Their content, themes and aesthetics are rarely on the agenda in Munich's conventional cultural scene. This area stands for diversity and heterogeneity. The cityscape here surprises with old industrial buildings, colorful graffiti and wildly sprawling gardens, creating an inspiring atmosphere.
As a source of inspiration for sustainable models, the site has far more significance than just as an urban planning instrument or location factor. Here there is still the opportunity to appropriate space without constraints and to create sustainable structures. This freedom is a prerequisite for the development of creative processes. With this in mind, we must campaign for the continued existence and development of the site - for the preservation of these special places for Munich.
