The glass industry has always played an important role in human history and still offers a wide range of applications today - from utility and container glass to flat glass and technical applications in the optics and construction industries. Glass is also indispensable in art and culture.
In Bavaria, the glass industry is represented at various locations, particularly in the Arberland in Eastern Bavaria and on the Rennsteig in Upper Franconia.
Visions for the future of the glass industry: mastering challenges and seizing opportunities
The glass industry is facing numerous challenges: climate-neutral production, digitalization and a shortage of skilled workers. Rising energy prices, scarcity of resources and CO2 reduction are key issues. Demographic change, securing skilled workers and retaining knowledge are also crucial.
Modern approaches and technologies are needed to overcome these challenges. Glass production requires large amounts of resources and energy as well as interdisciplinary expertise. Greater cooperation between industry players is necessary to ensure sustainability and competitiveness.
Glass 2.0 network: collaboration and innovation in the glass industry
At the cabinet meeting in Freyung on August 1, 2023, measures were decided to strengthen the international competitiveness of the glass industry and NETZWERK GLAS 2.0 was launched from the Glas Arberland network founded in 2010.
The aim of NETZWERK GLAS 2.0 is to promote innovation in the glass industry, bring players together and provide a platform for new ideas. This strengthens the industry's competitiveness and increases the visibility of industry expertise and innovations.
This network facilitates access to cooperation partners. Guiding activities in the areas of transformation, project financing and funding are undertaken. In addition, support is provided with numerous services from the Bayern Innovativ portfolio, for example in innovation management or advice on patents. The industry platform and innovation network for the cultural and creative industries enables glass artists to use their creativity as a driver for innovation.
