Profile
Since 1990, Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Sulzbach-Rosenberg has been developing business-oriented concepts and processes for the provision and use of energy, raw materials and materials. Topics include thermal and chemical energy storage, energy conversion from biomass and waste, raw materials, materials and surfaces for energy technology and resource management. Fraunhofer UMSICHT accompanies its customers from the process idea to the pilot plant and from product development to pilot production. Integrated process considerations for efficient, economical and sustainable solutions are the focus here.
The Center for Energy Storage, founded at the site in 2012, focuses on integrated, decentralized energy conversion and energy storage systems.
The Sulzbach-Rosenberg branch of the institute in the Nürnberg metropolitan region employs around 135 people and in 2015 achieved annual sales of around 7.6 million € (as of Dec. 31, 2015). The institute has been a member of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft since July 1, 2012.
Fraunhofer UMSICHT in Oberhausen was also founded in 1990 and develops technical innovations in the fields of environmental, materials, process and energy technology. The institute's goal is to advance sustainable management, environmentally friendly technologies and innovative behavior in order to improve people's quality of life and promote the innovative capacity of the economy.
In 2015, 489 employees were part of the workforce at both sites - most of them trained in science and engineering. Of these, 314 make up the permanent staff, plus 16 apprentices and 159 students, trainees and interns. In 2015, the institute generated sales of more than EUR 39.1 million.
