Summary

The ZAE Bayern is a non-university research institute that conducts energy research from basic principles to application. Since its foundation in 1991, it has pursued the goal of reducing CO2 emissions through renewable energies and efficiency measures.

Profile

ZAE Bayern with its approx. 60 employees offers customers complete innovation packages in the field of efficient and sustainable energy systems. At its main site in Garching near Munich, research takes place on 3,500 m² of laboratory space. In the Hof branch and the institute's own test center for renewable generation and storage technologies with connection to the local low-voltage grid in neighboring Arzberg, intelligent components for the power grid of the future are tested.

Since December 1991, ZAE has existed as a non-profit association with the goal of promoting energy research and providing education, training, consulting, information and documentation in all areas that are significant for energy technology and the sciences involved in it. To date, thanks to its dedicated staff, it has developed into a nationally and internationally recognized research institute.

In its areas of expertise renewable energy, energy storage and energy efficiency, ZAE Bayern combines materials research, component development and system optimization in an interdisciplinary research approach to create a seamless value chain. Research at the interface of fundamentals and industrial application addresses, among other things, thermal and electrochemical energy storage, energy-efficient processes and urban quarters, smart grids and cross-sector energy systems (electricity and heating/cooling).

ZAE's goal is to achieve an energy supply that is as CO2-neutral as possible through the synergetic use of renewable energies and energy efficiency technologies. To this end, the institute cooperates in its projects with industry, from SMEs to large corporations, as well as with university and non-university research partners. The focus here is on the practical application of scientific findings.
