Slogan

Lightweight construction, fiber composites and material simulation

Profile

Technology Campus Neustadt an der Donau as a competent R&D partner in the fields of lightweight construction, fiber composite technology and material simulation with many years of experience also in the field of aeronautical engineering

Technology

The Technology Campus (TC) Neustadt an der Donau at OTH Regensburg focuses on the topics of lightweight construction, fiber composites and material simulation. Specific topics based on projects funded by the TC working groups include Impact loads and damage detection in the sense of smart structures for fiber composites, the development of high-performance 3D printing systems with continuous fiber reinforcement for thermoplastics and thermosets, the improvement of biocomposites and natural fiber composites of all kinds across the entire value chain, the production and design of fibre composite pipes and tanks especially for hydrogen transport, the impregnation of thermoplastic fibre composites, the material behaviour of fibre composites especially with high-performance plastics, alternative manufacturing processes such as frontal polymerization, the simulative mapping of materials from micro to macro level (e.g. additively manufactured metals), and the development of new materials. (e.g. additively manufactured metals), the crack initiation and propagation behavior of pipeline steels for the transport of fossil and hydrogen fuels as well as the simulation of components with the support of AI-based surrogate models.

The Technology Campus Neustadt an der Donau offers a wide range of service and cooperation opportunities as part of its specialist focus. In addition to public research projects with and without partners from industry and research, which are usually coordinated and applied for under the main responsibility, the portfolio includes R&D projects as well as simulation, manufacturing, failure analysis and testing orders from a wide range of industries. Another focus is the long-standing cooperation with numerous German Armed Forces facilities and companies in the defense industry, which usually revolve around the calculation, production and analysis of fiber-reinforced plastics in innovative manufacturing processes, with innovative subcomponents (usually the matrix material) or for innovative systems such as a structural monitoring system against impact loads.

Products & Services

As a Technology Campus, our range of services extends far beyond research and development activities. We offer a state-of-the-art laboratory that provides extensive possibilities in the areas of material analysis and testing.

  • Determination of mechanical characteristics and component behavior (elastic characteristics, strength, fatigue, creep behavior, deformation)
  • Material analysis of plastics (rheology, fiber and pore volume content, ultrasound, µCT, SEM, micrograph, TGA, DSC)
  • Impact generation, analysis and residual strength determination (CAI)
  • Prototype production (additive manufacturing in FFF and SLA processes, fiber composite components from hot air autoclave, VARI process, hand laminate, heating press and fiber winding)
  • Mechanical processing in the workshop area (incl. CNC milling machine)
  • Preparation of test specimens (cutting, sanding, glue-on application using adhesive, attachment of strain gages and measuring equipment)
  • Testing and removal from storage under environmental conditions (climate chambers, climate change chamber)

In addition to know-how in connection with systems, the following points are part of the range of services offered by the Technology Campus Neustadt an der Donau:

  • Damage and process analysis when faults and challenges occur in companies (troubleshooting)
  • Calculation and simulation orders (FEM, CFD, topology optimization, etc.)
  • Creation of material and component design tools
  • Constructive development and further development
  • Consulting and research
  • Lectures and training on specialist topics (internal and external)
  • Coordination and management of funding projects from definition to application to completion
