Energy price comparison: heating with heat pump or natural gas heating system

Heat pump heats up to 39% cheaper than natural gas

The comparison portal Verivox has calculated that heating with a heat pump is more than a third cheaper at current energy prices compared to a natural gas heating system.

The electricity costs for an efficient heating system with heat pump lie in the country-wide average about 39% under the gas costs. An analysis of the comparison portal Verivox sees even with a not very efficient heat pump still costs around 11% lower. That is because the natural gas prices rose between October 2021 and March 2022 around 85%.

An efficiently working heat pump with an annual performance factor (JAZ) of 4 needs for the supply of an average need of 20,000 kWh warmth altogether 5,000 kWh heat pump electricity. An AWC of 4 means that the heating system generates 4 kWh of heat from 1 kWh of electrical energy. Optimally set heating systems should achieve an AER of between 3 and 5. For this, according to Verivox, the nationwide average price in March 2022 is 1,573 euros. That means a around 39% more favorable price in the comparison to the gas costs.

Even weak heat pump is more inexpensive than natural gas heating

Even a less efficient heating system with heat pump, which has only a JAZ of 2.7, costs less than a natural gas heating system. The nationwide average price for the 7,500 kWh of electricity then required is currently 2,310 euros. This means that electricity costs are still 11% lower than gas costs. The annual performance factor (APF) expresses the efficiency of the heating system. The data are based on the Verivox consumer price index.

"Because of the high wholesale prices, the electricity prices for heat pumps will in all probability continue to rise in the coming months - but this also applies to gas prices," said Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox. If the current price difference remains, the changeover to a heat pump becomes increasingly lucrative.

Amortization of the new heating possible in 10 years

"Assuming a price of around 20,000 euros including state subsidies, the changeover to an efficient heat pump could pay for itself within 10 years at current prices. The price ranges for the heating systems and the necessary conversion work are large, however, and depend on the individual situation," says Thorsten Storck.

In new construction, heat pumps are already statistically the most popular heating technology. "Even in existing buildings, the switch to a heat pump can be worthwhile," said Storck. However, he said, that depends heavily on the structural conditions. Therefore one should consult a qualified energy consultation locally before the conversion. This can determine which type of heat pump is possible in each case and how efficient the future heating system can be.
