In Pfeffenhausen, about 80 kilometers north of Munich, a 5-MW electrolyzer is to be built and produce hydrogen from 2023, among other things for the Munich regional transport.

The Hy2B Hydrogen GmbH has commissioned Kraftanlagen Energies & Services GmbH as general contractor with the construction of the electrolysis plant including compressor and filling stations. An alkaline electrolyzer of the Norwegian company "NEL ASA" is to be installed. As Hy2B announces, the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the buildings and outdoor facilities is scheduled for this fall. Construction of the facilities for electrolysis is then to begin as early as the end of this year. Finally, in the second half of 2023, the electrolyzer is to produce an average of 1,200 kilograms of green hydrogen per day.

The hydrogen is to be compressed to up to 450 bar, according to further reports, and filled into pressurized gas trailers with a capacity of 1,250 kilograms at a filling station. The trucks are to deliver the hydrogen to two bus and truck refueling stations in the districts of Munich and Ebersberg. From 2023, the first ten hydrogen fuel cell buses should then be able to refuel there and start operating in the regional transport of the Munich transport and tariff association.

The remaining hydrogen is to be made available to additional customers from the mobility and energy sectors. From 2024 / 2025, the electrolyzer is also to supply the hydrogen technology user center (WTAZ) planned in the immediate vicinity with hydrogen. As one of four hydrogen centers planned nationwide, the WTAZ in Pfeffenhausen, Bavaria, is to co-found the National Hydrogen Innovation and Technology Center (ITZ).

Network-serving operation of the electrolyzer is planned

The electricity for the electrolysis is to come from regional renewable energy plants. According to Hy2B, the start will be made by a planned 10-MW PV ground-mounted plant of the energy cooperative "BürgerEnergie Niederbayern eG". It is to be connected directly to the electrolyser and connected to the power grid via it. This will enable the electrolyzer to be operated economically and in line with the grid. Besides with the help of the Elektrolyseurs regional producers a short term connection and acceptance possibility for their river are to be offered

As "historical step into a new age" called Bavaria economics and energy minister Hubert Aiwanger (free voters) the order for the building of the Elektrolyseurs. The planned plant in Pfeffenhausen is an "important building block to further advance the hydrogen state of Bavaria". As part of the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Innovation Program (NIP2), the project is being funded with up to 20 million euros by the German Federal Ministry of Digital Affairs and Transport.Hy2B Wasserstoff GmbH was founded in October 2020 as the operating company for the electrolyzer and the distribution of the green hydrogen from the HyPerformer model region "HyBayern" of the districts of Landshut, Ebersberg and Munich. The shareholders are Hynergy Invest GmbH, BayWa AG, Tyczka Hydrogen GmbH, the districts of Landshut and Munich, and the energy cooperatives Niederbayern eG, Isar eG and Unterhaching eG.
