Twin Transformation Research Campus

New Fraunhofer research campus launched

14.10.2025

The Business Informatics Division of the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT and the Fraunhofer Process Innovation Project Group of Fraunhofer IPA are pleased to announce the successful launch of the Fraunhofer Twin Transformation Research Campus.

This ambitious project was launched to sustainably strengthen economic development in Upper Franconia through applied cutting-edge research and to contribute to the region's competitiveness and location security. The realization of the research campus is made possible by the generous support of the Upper Franconia Foundation - a strong signal for the relevance and regional anchoring of the project.

At the heart of the project is the topic of twin transformation. "Twin transformation is the synergetic implementation of digital transformation and sustainability transformation in companies. It is about how companies can use digital technologies to achieve their sustainability goals and how, in turn, sustainability efforts enable and drive digital innovations. Pure digital and sustainability initiatives are also the focus of the research campus in order to comprehensively cover the areas of digitalization and sustainability," explains Prof. Dr. Maximilian Röglinger, Deputy Director of Fraunhofer FIT and Co-Director of the new research campus. In terms of content, the activities are organized in three so-called Twin Labs: Digital & Sustainable Production, Digital & Sustainable Organization and Digital & Sustainable Value Networks.

The aim of the research campus is to improve cooperation between science and industry and to develop practical solutions for the challenges of digital and sustainable transformation. The close cooperation between Fraunhofer FIT and Fraunhofer IPA brings together extensive expertise from the fields of business administration, computer science and engineering - a combination that addresses the needs of regional companies particularly well.

To anchor the project in the long term, networking events will be held in the coming months as part of a roadshow in all Upper Franconian districts. This will provide space for the exchange of ideas, networking and inspiration. In particular, the aim is to identify the needs of the regional economy through direct dialog.
The year 2025 will culminate on 9 December in Bayreuth with a research dialogue on the topic of twin transformation, jointly organized by acatech - National Academy of Science and Engineering, Fraunhofer FIT and Fraunhofer IPA. The results of the roadshow will be on display there and the first demonstrators and reference projects will be presented to the general public.
