New rail links for Europe

The European Commission is supporting ten pilot projects that will create new cross-border rail connections or improve existing ones. The projects are intended to enable additional train connections between major cities in the EU, including  to and from Munich, Berlin and Hamburg.
Travelers from Germany will be able to benefit from various new connections. From Munich, there will be direct flights to Zurich, Milan and Rome. Additional connections are also to be established between Munich, Vienna and Budapest. Northern Europe will also be better connected with Germany: At night, new trains are to run between Berlin, Copenhagen and Stockholm, and during the day between Hamburg and Gothenburg, among others.

In total, the Commission wants to double cross-border rail traffic by 2030 and triple it by 2050. Demand for convenient and sustainable mobility is growing. Barriers to the introduction and operation of cross-border passenger rail services have been identified in an action plan. The Commission's announced support is intended to help rail operators and public authorities reduce the remaining hurdles. The upcoming pilot projects will show how well these obstacles can be overcome so that even more new connections can be created in the long term.
