Europe-wide sustainability in the glass industry through electricity, recycling and innovation

30.03.2026

Europe's glass industry is driving decarbonization: climate-friendly production approaches are emerging with electric melting furnaces, recycling and innovation - but politics and infrastructure remain crucial.

The European and British glass industries are driving forward their collaboration for a climate-neutral future and are increasingly focusing on innovative technologies such as electric and hybrid melting furnaces. New industry reports from British Glass and the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE) show that decarbonization is not only possible, but already underway. With a high recycling rate and clear strategies, the glass industry is strengthening its role as a sustainable partner for important supply chains. At the same time, it is clear that the right political and infrastructural framework conditions are needed for the next big step.

With the primary preference for the use of electric furnaces and the addition of hydrogen or biogas where necessary, the Europe-wide assessment coincides with the results of our workshop in February. (see also: First workshop in the Glass 2.0 network - focus on climate neutrality)
This encourages us to continue working with companies, politicians and other networks across technologies and sectors to drive forward the topic of electrification and CO2-free raw materials in these areas.
