The European Commission has adopted new rules for electrical appliances such as washing machines, televisions and portable video game consoles to reduce their energy consumption in standby mode. This updates the Ecodesign Regulation from 2008. The changes take into account technological developments in recent years and extend the scope of the rules, for example to products with external low-voltage supplies such as small power supplies (including WLAN routers and modems) or wireless speakers.
Through the new requirements, the Commission expects to reduce electricity consumption by 4 TWh annually by 2030, equivalent to a CO2 saving of 1.36 million tons per year. In addition, consumers will also benefit from lower electricity bills: They should be able to save a total of 530 million euros per year by 2030. Information on the power consumption of devices in standby mode and the time required to enter this mode will also be more easily accessible to consumers.
Once adopted, the new regulation will soon be published in the Official Journal and will come into force 20 days later. Manufacturers will then have a two-year transition period until the rules fully apply. However, some limit values will be applied in two stages, with the final rules only applying after four years.
