The EU Commission has launched a public consultation on the digitization of travel documents.
Citizens, institutions and interest groups can give their opinion on how the initiative could contribute to smooth travel and security in the Union. The results will be incorporated into the planned draft legislation, which aims to create a uniform standard for digital travel documents used in the Schengen area and thus simplify travel. Digital passports and ID cards not only facilitate border controls and support international travel. They are also quicker to issue than physical documents. The Commission announced the initiative in the Schengen strategy adopted in 2021.
The survey is open until June 28, 2023.
