The European Commission is sending a further signal for Europe's digital sovereignty: two new calls for projects with a total volume of over 307 million euros have been published as part of the Horizon Europe research program. The aim: to expand the leading position in strategic technologies through sustainable and human-centered innovations.
The funding is divided between two key areas:
- Trusted AI & Data Services (221.8 million euros): Funding will be provided for projects in the fields of robotics, quantum technologies, photonics as well as virtual worlds. There is also a focus on the "Open Internet Stack Initiative", which aims to strengthen sovereign digital commons (open and independent technology alternatives to non-European providers).
- Strategic Autonomy & Materials (85.5 million euros): This call addresses next-generation AI agents, robotics for industry and services, and the development of innovative materials with enhanced sensing capabilities.
The calls are aimed at a wide range of stakeholders from EU Member States and partner countries:
- Innovative companies (especially SMEs)
- Universities and research institutions
- Public administrations
Interested consortia can submit their project proposals until April 15, 2026 .
