Digitization: EU praises Germany

In its latest report, the EU Commission has analyzed progress towards the Digital Decade 2030. Germany is particularly impressive in the development of cutting-edge technologies such as semiconductors, edge nodes and quantum computing. However, there is still some catching up to do in the areas of digital public services, high-performance networks and digital skills.

Across the EU, the report shows mixed results for the target areas:

  • Digital infrastructure: fiber optics and 5G rollout are making slow progress.
  • Digitalization of companies: AI, Big Data and cloud solutions are being used more frequently, but are being introduced too slowly.
  • Digital skills: Only just over half of the EU population has basic skills, while there is a shortage of skilled workers and a significant gender gap.
  • Public services: Digitalized but often dependent on non-European providers. In addition, fragmented markets and regulations make implementation more difficult.

Next steps:

Member states will review the Commission's recommendations and consult with it on the way forward. In 2026, the Commission will review the objectives of the Digital Decade Policy Program (DDPP) to assess whether they still reflect the changing digital landscape and meet the requirements of the EU's priorities and ambitions.
