The first project of Batteriespeicher-Park Worms GmbH is taking shape. The three partner companies involved have started construction of a 30 MW facility in Worms.
The first large-scale storage facility in Worms is now gradually emerging from the ground. The ground-breaking ceremony for the Batteriespeicher-Park Worms GmbH project took place on June 23. The project is the first cooperation between the Worms-based companies EWR AG and Timbra Holding GmbH and the Baden-Württemberg project manager "WPower GmbH".
The storage facility, which has an output of 30 MW and a capacity of 65 MWh, is being built in the immediate vicinity of the Holzhof substation. It will primarily absorb surplus electricity from renewable plants and feed it back into the grid as required. According to a press release, EWR CEO Stephan Wilhelm describes the flexible storage facility as "forward-looking technology that will make our region more independent, more stable and more climate-friendly".
The supplier EWR, the merger of Elektrizitätswerk Rheinhessen and Stadtwerke Worms, which was formed in 2002, operates the facility. W Power is responsible for the technical implementation and project management, while Timbra is responsible for project development, including the necessary approvals. The modules are being supplied by the Berlin-based company Tesvolt, using NCA battery cells from Samsung SDI (we reported).
The battery storage system is due to be connected to the EWR Netz grid in 2026. It is the premiere for the joint storage company, which intends to tackle further large-scale stationary storage facilities in the region around Worms, which is located on the left bank of the Rhine in the south-east of Rhineland-Palatinate. The makers compare the debut battery with the capacity of around 1,200 electric car batteries.
