From 0 to 40.5 in around half a year: those responsible at Bayernets have now started work on the construction of the Augusta gas pipeline, which is dozens of kilometers long.
It is scheduled to go into operation in the last quarter of the current year: The gas pipeline dubbed "Augusta" is now taking shape, according to the largely municipally-owned company Bayernets. The ground-breaking ceremony has now taken place at the Wertingen compressor station (Dillingen district).
The steel pipeline in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia will reach a total length of 40.5 kilometers and end at the Kötz grid node in the district of Günzburg. Fabian Mehring (Free Voters), Digital Minister of the Bavarian state government, described the pipeline as a "milestone for greater grid stability and thus for a more independent and secure gas supply in southern Germany" at the official ceremony.
Bayernets Managing Director Matthias Jenn emphasized the "high relevance" of Augusta in connection with the ongoing discussion about flexible gas-fired power plants as a backup system for renewable electricity production. The pipeline will make it possible to connect new gas-fired power plants and Baden-Württemberg to the gas storage facilities in southern Bavaria and Salzburg. In addition, the pipeline could also transport hydrogen ("H2-ready") in the future.
Augusta has a kind of sister pipeline in the immediate vicinity, with the gas pipeline from Senden to Vohburg running in parallel. The pipeline now being built will have a diameter of 700 millimetres and operate at a pressure of 100 bar.
Bayernets, as the transmission system operator, has earmarked around 180 million euros for investment in the gas infrastructure - including for Augusta - by the end of the current year. Last year, the company raised outside capital for this purpose (we reported). At the time, the competitive process generated a total of 210 million euros for the Munich-based company, which is a subsidiary of the two municipal utilities in Munich and Augsburg and the majority municipal supplier Bayerngas.
