The neighboring municipalities of Germering and Puchheim in Munich want to be supplied with CO2-neutral geothermal energy. SWM is now taking this into its own hands.
The geothermal project "Zukunftswärme M West" is taking shape. On February 18, the councils of the municipalities of Germering and Puchheim decided to work together with Stadtwerke München (SWM) on a sustainable heat supply using geothermal energy.
The next step is to establish a company in which both towns and SWM have a stake. "The aim is to enable a secure and climate-neutral heat supply in future by operating our own heating network," according to an SWM press release.
A deep geothermal plant will extract heat from thermal water at around 90 degrees Celsius. Eight boreholes are planned - four production and four reinjection pipes each. The planned geothermal plant should not only offer a climate-neutral heating solution, but also ensure stable prices. SWM expects the geothermal plant to be commissioned "in 2033 at the earliest".
The heating plant will have an output of 52 MW, which will be split as follows: 60 percent SWM (31 MW), 25 percent (13 MW) Germering and 15 percent (8 MW) Puchheim. The purchase of the heat output should correspond to the shares of the three players in the geothermal company.
This means that the investment costs incurred would also be divided up in the same way. The parties involved estimate the total amount to be raised at 260 million euros. The company expects funding of 91 million euros (35 percent).
Karin Thelen, Managing Director Regional Energy Transition at SWM: "As a municipal company, we support the towns of Germering and Puchheim with our more than 20 years of expertise in the construction and operation of geothermal plants as an equal partner in the transformation of the heat supply." The company is looking forward to future collaboration in the "Zukunftswärme M West" network.
