Two agri-PV plants with a total capacity of 18 MW are to be built in Waldburg in southern Germany. The municipality and local residents can participate in the project.
The land is still being used purely for agriculture. However, this is set to change in the coming months: In Waldburg, near Lake Constance, one of the currently largest agri-photovoltaic projects in this country is to be built - spread over several plants. The local council has passed a corresponding resolution to build two plants with a total output of 18 MW, as announced by "solmotion project GmbH" on August 27. The Ravensburg solar company Solmotion will also realize the plants. The company has already built a 10 MW agri-PV project in the neighboring municipality of Schlier, among other projects.
The first plant of the Waldburg project is to be built on an area of around 13 hectares in Neuwaldburg and will have a connected load of around 8 MW. The second plant is spread over two sub-areas: around 2.7 hectares at the Kalksteig traffic circle and around 8 hectares near Greut. A total of 10 MW is planned here. Both plants are to be equipped with battery storage systems to ensure optimal use of the solar power generated.
Solmotion is currently planning projects totaling around 400 MW in southern Germany. The first will be implemented in 2025, with up to 100 MW to follow in 2026, according to the company's announcement.
"The demand for Agri-PV is enormous. We are certain that the projects we are planning will be successfully realized. Agri-PV works for us - without having to wait for EU approval under state aid law," explained Managing Director Michael Keil.
Both the community and citizens can participate in the project - either via a subordinated loan or by purchasing inverter shares. The aim is for part of the added value to flow directly back into the region. With the new plants in Waldburg, Gemeinerat and the company want to set an example for climate protection, energy independence and regional value creation - not only for Upper Swabia, but for the whole of Germany.
