N-ERGIE Netz GmbH has put the operation of a grid-serving large-scale battery storage system out to tender for the first time and awarded the contract to MaxSolar GmbH.
The company prevailed against more than 20 competitors.
The storage facility is being built in the Ansbach district of Winterschneidbach near a central substation. An output of 20 megawatts with a capacity of 100 megawatt hours is planned. Construction is scheduled to start in the second half of the year.
In contrast to market-driven storage facilities, the plant will be operated specifically to serve the grid. This means that charging and discharging are adapted to the needs of the electricity grid in order to reduce bottlenecks and improve the absorption of renewable energies.
According to N-ERGIE, the storage system can cushion midday peaks from photovoltaics in particular and thus help to stabilize the distribution grid. MaxSolar also sees such concepts as an important building block for a resilient and cost-efficient energy supply.
The project has been coordinated with the Federal Network Agency and is considered a pilot project. Further tenders for grid-supporting storage systems could follow.
